The Ministry of Education is making arrangements to register all teachers in the country afresh. The ministry wants to eliminate those claiming to be teachers yet they are not qualified but currently practice in different schools both government and private.

The Permanent Secretary Ministry of Education Alex Kakooza revealed this during the opening of the selection exercise for senior five students in Kampala.

Kakooza urged teachers to take the selection process seriously,‘’ In order to continue with the achievements so far made in terms of training our students, we now need to focus on the selection and placement exercise to influence their subsequent performance at ‘A’ level and the Technical Institute level. It is therefore important to request you to pay full attention to the purpose and outcome of this exercise’’.

This year most of the schools lowered their points compared to last year. Gayaza high school has placed its cut off points at 15, Kings College Budo at 14 for girls and 11 for boys, Nabisunsa 16, Nabbingo 17, Mengo SS 19 for boys and 22 among others.

Teachers say the cut off points were lowered given the fact that performance in 2018 was not good compared to 2017.

The selection period is a testing time for teachers and parents as each puts pressure on the other during the admission process.

Teachers have to fend off desperate parents trying to get their children admitted in the best schools while parents will do nearly anything to ensure a good secondary school education.

During the exercise the permanent secretary ministry of education revealed that teachers in both government and private schools will be registered to eliminate those who got into the profession without going through proper channels.

The permanent secretary ministry of education says in doing this the Ministry is putting more focus on enhancing teacher professionalism and training.

The ministry is also working with the Ministry of Public Service and Finance together with Education Service Commission to fill the existing vacancies in respective Institutions as a way of strengthening capacity to deliver quality teaching.

The education ministry first mooted the idea to register teachers in late 2018. The ministry announced that teachers will start registering using an online system. The Teacher Management and Information System is aimed at streamlining the registration process of teachers in the country.

The Uganda National Teachers Union said 140,000 teachers subscribe to its union. The union has complained that between 1,000 and 2,000 teachers are deleted from the payroll every month without any justification.
