VIDEO: Ministry of Education to investigate nurses caning video, punish culprits

Ministry of Education and Sports has launched investigations into the incident at Ishaka Adventist School of Nursing in Bushenyi district where tutors were caught on camera caning students.

The ministry banned corporal punishment in schools and colleges and all acts of violence against children in schools, institutions and colleges.

In 2006 the ministry of education issued a circular banning corporal punishment in schools. This came after many schools continued to ignore the 2015 directive against corporal punishment.

Last week a video showing a tutor caning students at Ishaka Adventist School of Nursing Bushenyi went viral and caused an uproar.Critics took the ministry to task about the incident. The ministry has since come out to investigate the incident.

A team from the ministry of education comprising of officials from the education standards, BITVET, Nurses council has been dispatched and given two weeks to come up with a comprehensive report about the incident.

After investigations, the ministry will with Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council to decide on how to handle the matter and issue the appropriate punishments for the culprits.

If convicted, the culprits are likely to face serious caution, suspension or withdrawal of practicing license.

The Commissioner in Charge of Business, Technical, Vocational Education and Training Hajjat Safina Museene says nurses and midwives undergo such punishments are in school are unlikely who go are subjected to corporal punishments while in school cannot handle patients with a professional touch.
