DP urges government to release Rwandan prisoners

The Democratic Party DP has demanded for the immediate release of Rwandans who were arrested last year in connection with kidnap of fellow countrymen.

The 13 were arrested together with Nixon Agasiirwe and other senior police officers.

They were charged in court martial.

Addressing a weekly press conference, Fred Mukasa Mbidde, the DP vice president and a member of EALA said since the Rwandese prisoners are civilians, they should be tried in civil courts where they can be granted bail.

Mbidde also said the release of the prisoners will soothe the frosty relationship between the two countries.

The 13 prisoners are: Rutagungira Rene, Peter Siborurema, Rwamu Emmanuel, Rutayisire Augustine Rugorotsi Eric, Kwizera Bernard, Mishawenumana Damasiene, Twahirwa David and Ishimwe Moses.

Others are: Kayibanda Rogers Donne, Ndayambaje Emmanuel, Pastor Mufasha Rogers, Uwineza Claudine and Kayobera.

The EALA MP said, if the government fails to adhere to their call for their release, he will be forced to table this issue before EALA.

"People of Uganda have benefited a lot at the close relationship integration under common market protocol and so they will not accompany government on a voyage of war with Rwanda and this therefore should serve on raw material for the illumination of further relationship than the contrary," Mbidde said.
