15 finalists to battle for shs150M in Total’s 2019 innovation challenge

A group of 15 people has been named  by Total Uganda as the finalists in the second edition of the Startupper of the year challenge for 2019.

The Startupper challenge is aimed at supporting the best innovators in the country.

Speaking at the function to unveil the finalists at Sheraton Hotel in Kampala, Total Uganda Managing Director Obi Imemba said many people have benefitted out of the challenge that started in 2018.

“The winners of the previous challenge have gone on to make their companies big and employ more people, thanks to funding from the Total Startupper of the year challenge,”Imemba said.

He explained that their main aim is to support ideas that provide solutions to the various challenges that challenge the African society.

“It is our duty to create opportunities for ourselves and the Startupper of the year challenge is one of those.”

Procedure

For one to participate in the Startupper of the year challenge, they must be less than 35 years of age with a business project which is less than two years old.

The innovation idea must have a social economic impact including solving problems and employing a big number of people.

The challenge according to officials from Total Uganda is meant to drive innovation and entrepreneurship in a bid to solve problems affecting the society.

From the 15 people, a panel of experts will decide the top three innovations whose owners will be rewarded respectively.

The winner will receive funding to a tune of shs75 million, whereas the first runners up and second runners up will receive shs 45 and shs30 million respectively.

The 15 finalists include; Mugagga Arnold (Seatpack), Omoding Geoffrey (Sayans Academy), Asiimwe Hilda (Digital Health Access), Vicent Nemeyimana (Swapafrica), Lema Andrew (Easy Matatu), Kyomuhendo Sylivia (Infants' Health Foundation), Kaweesi Simon (Careers Master) and Mercy Takuwa (Medvac Technology),

Others are Ndugwa Fahad (Smart Pepper Spray), Menyo Innocent (M-Scan), Ninsiima Christine (I-Create Kids Club), Bataire Julius (Enimiro), Naturinda Catherine (Toto Voice Network Uganda Ltd), Bomukama Muhangi (Lactating Mothers Fashion) and Ndugu Nelson (Rural Science Education).
