Buganda, Kooki relations worsen

FARISH MAGEMBE

Kooki -The relations between Buganda and Kooki, a chiefdom attached to Buganda has taken a turn for the worse after officials insisted that Buganda leaders must seek permission before they visit.

On November 27 Buganda's premier Charles Peter Mayiga was temporally blocked by security from visiting Kooki county after  information emerged that there was a group of Kooki royalists who were planning to harm him.

Later he was allowed to proceed under tight security.Since then Kooki chiefdom has been silent about these issues but yesterday, Idd Kiwanuka, the chiefdoms’s Premier said Mengo officials had continually undermined them yet they are an independent cultural institution.

He said they will not allow Mengo officials to trespass on their land and if they do, they will resort to legal means.

In 1896, the two cultural institutions signed an agreement to cooperate on a number of issues. They agreed to remove boundaries but some officials in the chiefdom believe this agreement is now irrelevant.
