Police arrest three for stealing boda bodas, murdering riders; Gun recovered

Police in Kampala in a joint security agencies’ cooperation have arrested three people connecting to the rampant boda boda armed robberies and also recovered a gun used in the process.

The suspects identified as Lawrence Okello a resident of Namawojjolo, Anthony Ouma of Namuwongo and Grace Kahunde, the custodian of suspected stolen motorcycles have been arrested and an SAR gun used in committing robberies recovered.

Their arrest was as a result of the recent murder of a boda rider identified as Wellaci Makumbi who was shot dead in Bweyogerere on Friday 30th November 2018, and his motorcycle, a Bajaj Boxer number UEN 922L robbed.

“One of the suspects identified as Okello confessed before the security operatives to having been responsible for shooting Makumbi in the head while working under the orders of his leader -Hassan, who is still on the run,” a statement from Kampala Metropolitan Police reads in part.

Okello told the officers that he had met Hassan at one of the buildings along Kiseeka who befriended him and was introduced to a quick money making venture of carrying out high level motorcycle robbery missions.

“He said that Hassan (still at large) brought an SAR gun in a bag and after using it to murder Wellaci Makumbi Kito a resident of Kirinya, he told Okello to meet him Namuwongo for his payment as he took off with the robbed motorcycle plus the gun.”

Upon search at Grace Kahunde's home, the officers recovered the motorcycle belonging to the deceased and an SAR gun hidden under a table in a bag.

The suspects are currently detained at Bweyogerere Police Station on charges of murder vide CRB 270/2018 contrary to section 188 and 189 of the Penal Code Act as more investigations are still on going.
