Sub counties to get electricity at subsidised cost

SUNDAY SSEBAGGALA

The minister for Energy and Mineral Development, Irene Muloni, has revealed  that the commencement of the new construction of power source in some  sub counties would enable every Ugandan to access electricity.

Muloni made the remarks in Entebbe during a consultative meeting with members of Natural Resources Committee of Parliament organized under the theme: “Accelerating access to affordable and reliable electricity supply”.

Muloni disclosed that MPs are negotiating with the management of Bujagali Hydro Power dam to

reduce on tariffs charged from 11.7 US cents per unit to at least 8.3 US cents.

The chairperson of the committee , Keefa Kiwanuka, noted that the country has secured $200m to connect sub counties and parishes to the grid.

Eng. Ziria Tibalwa Waako, the Chief Executive officer for the  Electricity Regulatory Authority(ERA) expressed concern that it’s hard to sensitise people on how to utilise the first 15 units whereby each

unit is charged Shs 250.

She also strongly warned unscrupulous persons who vandalise electricity installations saying that a tough Law is before parliament to penalise the culprits.
