Mourinho’s Manchester United stumbles as rivals Man City extend lead

Pressure continued mounting on Manchester United coach Jose Mourinho when his team was held to a two all draw by underdogs Southampton FC on Saturday.

Mourinho’s men who desperately needed a win at St Mary's stadium for their dream of finishing in the top-four to stay alive  ended up being relieved for avoiding  defeat after falling two goals behind against struggling Saints.

A Stuart Armstrong 13th minute goal and a Cedric Soares freekick seven minutes later saw the Red Devils fighting to at least earn a draw from the Saints who had won only once  in 13 games this season.

Manchester United was however relieved when off form striker Lomelu Lukaku and Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera scored before half time to ensure both team shared the spoils at the St. Mary’s stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Speaking shortly after the game, Mourinho said his team was not thorough especially in the midfield.

Man City excels more

Defending champions Manchester City found no hard time in beating Bournemouth for the blue Manchester side to go five points clear on top of the Premier League table.

Raheem Sterling was the man of the moment when he struck after 57 minutes at the Etihad Stadium to settle City's nerves.

Bernardo Silva's opener had been cancelled by Callum Wilson, a minute before half-time but Sterling re-established City's lead before Ilkay Gundogan gave them some breathing space with their third and final goal on the day.

Pep Guardiola’s boys are on 38 points, five above second placed Liverpool FC who play against Everton on Sunday in their Merseyside derby.

Manchester United are on the other side still in the seventh position with only 22 points out of 14 games.
