The operation to retrieve bodies of people who drowned in Lake Victoria when their boat capsized six days ago has ended.

On Friday afternoon, the wreckage of the ill-fated boat that had been retrieved from the deep waters where it was trapped was dragged to the lake shores before divers went inside the vessel to search for any dead bodies or valuable items.

Pumps were later used to empty the boat of water that had entered due to holes on its keel.

Items recovered

Meanwhile, more items including beer bottles, wallets and ATM cards were recovered by divers from the scene of the Saturday accident.

Frantic efforts by divers to look for any bodies still trapped under water proved futile.

Family of patriotic fisherman rewarded

On Friday, the family of Bosco Owecho, a fisherman who died while trying to save victims on the ill-fated boat was given $200 by a Kenyan businesswoman to assist them in welfare.

“We shall take care of feeding, school fees for the two children and any other kind of welfare to them because he was the only bread winner who died trying to save,” said businesswoman Primrose Wangi.

City socialite Brian Kirumira, also known as Brian White extended a helping hand to the family with a Shs 2 million.

Speaking to Nile Post, AIGP Asuman Mugenyi appealed to well-wishers to come to the help of Owecho’s family because their only bread winner died during the tragedy.

“Our appeal goes out to other good hearted people to come to the help of the family. Owecho did not have any relative neither did he know anyone on the boat but it was a priceless offer that took his life,”Mugenyi said.

“We should return the favour by helping his family. They live in a rented house and need a lot of help.”
