NRM’s Oguttu disqualified from LC V race as Museveni heads Busia to campaign for him

Ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer in the Busia LC V by-elections, Oguttu Boniface Paul, has been disqualified from the race.

Oguttu was kicked out by the Electoral Commission after it was discovered that his names did not match those on the academic papers he presented.

“Pursuant to Section 15 of the Electoral Commission Act, Laws of Uganda,  after hearing the parties on 23rd November, 2018, the Electoral Commission under MIN CM361/2018 has cancelled the nomination of Oguttu Boniface Paul as a candidate for the district chairperson, Busia District on grounds that the names in the nomination papers he presented during nominations do not match the names on the requisite academic documents accompanying  his nomination papers,” a statement from EC chairman Simon Byabakama reads.

“By copy of this communication, the Returning Officer Busia Electoral District is notified accordingly.”

This comes after several big wigs led by Party Secretary General, Justine Kasule Lumumba pitched camp in Busia to campaign for the flag bearer.

These would later be joined by Party Chairman and President Yoweri Museveni who was heading to Busia to campaign for Oguttu on Sunday.

“HE the President, who is also the national Chairman for the NRM party will be in Busia on Sunday to drum up support for the NRM flag bearer. Please send names of correspondents to cover. Thanks,” a message from the Presidency read earlier.

“Colleagues following reports that NRM candidate in Busia has been disqualified by EC. This programme may be cancelled. Will update you,” the message would later be updated.

Oguttu follows DP Hasubi Deogratius Njoki who has been also disqualified. This means the race sits among three independent candidates; Chrispus Bwire, Tony Ojambo and Geoffrey Wandera.
