Two UPDF soldiers, senior police officer arrested over robbery

The Internal Security Organization(ISO) has arrested two UPDF soldiers and a senior police officer for involvement in robberies in Buziga a Kampala suburb.

On Friday, a video of two unidentified soldiers and a police officer being arrested by the military made rounds on social media.

However, the army has cleared the air about the operation in which four people found participating in robbery this week.

“On October 12,security operations were carried out against a group of armed thugs in areas of Buziga after a tip off by some members of the public, “said the deputy army spokesperson, Lt.Col Deo Akiiki said in a statement.

“An assortment of both military and police stores were recovered from suspects including an AK47 belonging to Ugandan police with 29 rounds of ammunition.”

According to the deputy army spokesperson, four people including Lt.Tobias Turyabaruhanga, a retired UPDF soldier from Entebbe, Lance Corporal Benjamin Muzoora, a UPDF deserter, Assistant Superintendent of Police Godson Bishaka, the officer in charge of Kikumbi police station  in Najjanankumbi and one Gerald Mutagi from Entebbe were arrested during the operation.

He however noted that the operation was carried out by ISO and not the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) as had been alleged on social media.

“Any member of the armed forces whether retired, deserter or serving that involves himself or herself in such acts commits a grave offence that attracts a maximum punishment as stipulated in our laws,”said Lt.Col.Akiiki before condemning the acts.

The deputy army spokesperson however noted that joint operations will continue in various parts of the country to help fight criminality.
