Peter Nyombi, former attorney general, is dead

Former Attorney General Peter Nyombi is dead. He passed on Sunday evening at SAS Clinic where he had been rushed after developing breathing problems.

His brother, Henry Mayega said Nyombi had just had a meal with him at a family get together.

"He started complaining of breathing problems and we rushed him to SAS Clinic where he was pronounced dead on arrival," Mayega said.

Nyombi died aged 64.

Nyombi, a lawyer, was a former Member of Parliament for Buruuli County.

In a tweet, Gen Mugisha Muntu, the former FDC president wrote: "I have heard of the passing of Hon. Peter Nyombi, former Attorney General of Uganda. My condolences go out to his family and loved ones. May God strengthen you all through this undoubtedly difficult time."

Nyombi shall be remembered for his legal opinions including the one that backed the appointment of late Gen Aronda Nyakairima as a Cabinet minister, while still a serving army officer, and, the apparent support for re-instalment of Benjamin Odoki as Chief Justice.
