Buganda win inaugural FUFA Drum tournament

Buganda region on Saturday won the inaugural FUFA Drum tournament after holding West Nile region to a one all draw in a game played at the Green Light stadium in Arua for the former to win on 2-1 aggregate.

Going into the return-leg final game, Buganda carried a one nil advantage but were the first to concede, thanks to West Nile and BUL’s Villa Oromcham who saw the back of the net only four minutes to half time.

Oromchan connected well a flying cross from Rashid Okocha with a beautiful header that went past the Buganda goalkeeper for the team from West Nile to take the lead.

Despite continuing with a stellar performance, the hosts were however hit by an injury crisis as Geriga Atendere and Rashid Toha limped off with injuries giving the visitors a chance to shine.

The visitors then put up a resilient fight before it paid off when marksman Viane Ssekajugo who had a great show throughout the tournament restored parity in the 79th minute.

Buganda held onto the goal until the final whistle and they won the trophy on 2-1 aggregate following one nil win in the first leg game played in Mukono last week.

The result ensured Buganda have now gone into the books as the maiden winners of the FUFA Drum, a tournament organised by the football federation in a bid to promote and search for talent from various parts of the country.

A total of 16 teams took part in the inter-province championship.

On top of lifting the trophy, Buganda received a cash prize of shs32 million whereas the runners up, West Nile bagged shs15 million as a cash prize.
