Thousands turn up as LDU recruitment starts
The Uganda People’s Defence Forces has started recruitment of Local Defence Units personnel in the districts of Kampala, Mukono and Wakiso.
The recruitment is in response to a directive by the president and Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces, to call up reserves to support enforcement of law and order in Kampala Metropolitan area.

In Kampala, the exercise commenced Tuesday morning at Kololo Independence Grounds. At the recruitment centres, the applicants have been subjected to medical and physical body fitness checks and a road run to test endurance.
According to UPDF land forces spokesperson Henry Obbo, the process is ongoing smoothly with many people from all over the country turning up.
“We started at 6:30am with so many people, many came from Apac, Soroti, Serere, among other areas which shows interest to serve the nation but for this specific one, we need to recruit from area of residence. People must know whom they are protecting or serving,” he said.
Resident District Commissioner (RDC) for Kampala, Sarah Bananuka reiterated that members interested in joining the defence units must present letters of introduction from their Local Council Chairpersons.
While addressing the nation on security this month, President Museveni directed that 24,000 LDUs be recruited to curb crime.
