How security hoodwinked Bobi Wine supporters to deliver him home

From the onset, security was not going to allow Kyadondo East Member of Parliament, Robert Kyagulanyi also Bobi Wine use Entebbe road as he returned from the US.

On Wednesday, police warned they would not allow processions and rallies to the airport before saying they would  avail Bobi Wine security from the airport to his home in Magere, Wakiso district.

Meanwhile, the legislator cum singer vowed not to adhere to police’s instructions because insisting no one can choose where he goes and who receives him.

Along Entebbe road, there was heavy deployment of both the police and military as well as a number of road blocks at various points including Zzana, Kajjansi and Kisubi among others where security cried out thorough checks to all vehicles proceeding to the airport.

Journalists too were not spared as security never allowed anyone access the airport whereas a number of them were arrested and briefly detained at Aviation Police post, Entebbe police station and Kitoro police post.

Along Gayaza road, there was also heavy deployment of both the military and police patrolling the road in a bid to ensure safety.

Opposition politicians arrested

Early in the morning, police led by Old Kampala DPC Charles Nsaba cordoned off the home of Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago in Wakaliga, Rubaga division, stopping him from leaving.

Despite pleas by the lawyer to have him proceed for work, police stood a firm ground.

Meanwhile, MPs Asuman Basaalirwa(Bugiri Municipality) and Allan Ssewanyana were arrested by police as they proceeded to the airport to receive Kyagulanyi.

Bobi Wine arrives

At around 12:45, the plane carrying Kyagulanyi landed at Entebbe airport before he was quickly picked by already waiting security operatives.

Security had organised two decoy  convoys each with at least five vehicles that among other included a lead car, police patrol, ambulance  and a white police vehicle in which the ‘principal’ was being chauffeured.

They would drive at break-neck speed before separating along the way.

The first convoy later bypassed the road branching off to Kyagulanyi’s home and stopped at Kasangati police station before being followed by a number of journalists.

At Kasangati, the white vehicle containing the ‘principal’ was surrounded by a group of counter terrorism police officers as others and the military guarded the police station.

The Police director in charge of counter terrorism, AGIP Abbas Byakagaba would later beef up the team at Kasangati and to many, this was assurance their man was at Kasangati.

Meanwhile, a number of Kyagulanyi had gathered in big numbers and were chanting his songs and ‘people power’ slogan near Kasangati police station.

It took the intervention of the military that flogged them for the group to disperse.

Driven home

At Bobi Wine’s home in Magere, another convoy driving at break-neck speed arrive and opted to use the lower gate to the legislator’s home but he refused to get out of the vehicle.

Police would later be forced to drive him to the main gate where a gathering of his supporters waited for him.

The army and police deployed along Gayaza road.

The swarm of supporters refused to give way to the police vehicles before he was forced out of the vehicle and walked to his home.

Speaking briefly after returning home, Kyagulanyi applauded his supporters for keeping the spirit of change alive.

“I thank you my fans and supporters for being here for me and my family. The struggle still continues and let us keep the spirit,” the legislator told his supporters before returning to his house for a rest.

In a statement released later, police confirmed that they had ‘escorted’ well Kyagulanyi to his home.

“We wish to thank him for cooperating with the police at Entebbe airport that provided him with transport and lead car to his home,” Police spokesperson Emilian Kayima said in a statement.

“We call upon the Hon.MP to fully comply with the laws of the land and terms of his bail conditions.”
