Kadaga tasks MPs to budget for salaries of councillors countrywide
The Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga has asked MPs to consider budgeting for the salaries of both district and sub- county councillors across the country in the next financial year budget 2019/2020.
Speaking during a retreat of councillors in Serere district on Monday, Kadaga said its unfortunate that upcountry councillors earns less than Shs 200,000 shillings for district councillors and Shs 50,000 for the sub-county councillors.
Kadaga said it is unfortunate that councillors who are mandated with the constitutional responsibility of supervising government programmes in their areas of representation receive no facilitation to fulfil their obligation.
Apart from the Kampala Capital City Authority councillors who receive over Shs 5 million as their monthly take away home and the Kampala division councillors who also earn over 4 million shillings on a monthly basis, their counter parts in upcountry districts are grassing with no monthly salary.
According to Kadaga, this discrimination in facilitation of councillors is uncalled for as they perform the same role as stipulated in the Local Government Act and the Constitution.
The speaker's request however has deep financial implications given that there are more than 5,000 councillors at different levels throughout the country.
