VIDEO: Lawyers seek court order for MP Zaake’s travel

Lawyers of Mityana Municipality MP Francis Zaake, are seeking a court order to allow him travel outside the country for specialised treatment.

This follows a move by security personnel to continue holding the lawmaker at Kiruddu hospital in Kampala against his wish.

Zaake, alongside MP Robert Kyagulanyi, was blocked by police at Entebbe on Thursday as he tried to travel to India for further treatment.

“He cannot receive medical attention of his choice, he cannot be attended to by doctors of his choice. Since he was taken to Kirudu he has not received any medication,” Asuman Basalirwa, Zaake’s lawyer said.

“We are going to court because we think this pingpong must end and Zaake mostly will travel on a court order. The Director of CID told me Zaake has cases to answer and he could be produced in court may be Monday or Tuesday,” Basalirwa added.

Police on Thursday justified the arrest of Zaake at Entebbe airport.

On Thursday morning, the ambulance carrying Zaake from Rubaga hospital where he had been admitted following the Arua fracas was blocked from accessing the airport tarmac by police as he tried to fly out of the country to the US for further treatment due to his precarious condition.

However, in a statement, the police spokesperson Emillian Kayima justified the arrest as one intended to keep the ill legislator under their custody before being arraigned in courts of law over a number of charges against him.

Kayima explained that their investigations had indicated that Zaake was part of the suspects in the treason case where a group of people stoned President Museveni’s convoy two weeks ago.

“Zaake was arrested on August 13 but developed a condition which necessitated hospitalization and as a result he was taken to Arua referral hospital under police custody where he was admitted,”Kayima said.
