Photojournalist beaten, arrested for covering Kampala demos

James Akena, a veteran photojournalist who works for Reuters news agency was today roughed up by security operatives in downtown Kampala as he tried to take photos of demonstrators.

According to an eye-witness, Akena was hit with batons before his camera was confiscated by the military.

Catherine Byaruhanga, a stringer with BBC and a friend of Akena tweeted that the photojournalist had been briefly detained at the Central Police Station in Kampala. He was later released.
