Bobi Wine: People Power pressure group want Foreign Missions to act rather than send messages, Gov’t apology

Members of the People Power pressure group led by their Secretary General, Radio/TV presenter Ivan Kyeyune have called for the different foreign missions to put government to task rather than issue endless messages condemning acts surrounding the arrest and torture of a section Members of parliament among them; Bobi Wine and Mityana Municipality MP, Francis Butebi Zaake.

The group while addressing a press conference in Kampala, Monday appealed to US embassy and EU to have more sanctions on government officials that go seeking for Visas.

“We welcome the Statement by the European Union Delegation in Uganda and the several Heads of Mission in Uganda regarding the arrests and torture of several members of Parliament and 35 other people over the chaos in Arua Municipality by elections. We however demand that the several Heads of Missions shouldn’t only stop at issuing statements of Condemnation but act to end this impunity.”

“We believe the statements are not enough, since they are the major donors, we want them to put pressure on gov’t to release members unconditionally and ban travels to government officials and stop giving donations to Uganda because the over 40m people don’t benefit, but government channels the money to things like torture,” Kyeyune said.

“You people that vote those in positions and have more power, so you can reclaim it. Every Ugandan who sees this country as a failed state is automatically a member of people power,” Kyeyune said.

The group also demand that government be put on pressure to apologizse to all citizens for the bloodbath and massacre in Arua before the election and perpetrators brought to book as well as security personnel both of the army and Police that effected the torture of victims be prosecuted and brought to book.

“In case there is no response, we are calling upon Ugandans to have a peaceful demonstration, no spoiling property, no attacking security personnel but lock up business for 12 hours in solidarity with arrested members of parliament.”

On Monday, the US embassy in Uganda has expressed concern over the manner in which events in Arua, Gulu and Kampala unfolded since Monday leading to the arrest and detention of several Members of Parliament by security organs.

“We are deeply concerned by recent events in Arua, Kampala, and Gulu, and disturbed by reports of brutal treatment of Members of Parliament, journalists, and others at the hands of security forces,” reads in part the statement.
