Police have said they are still investigating to find out who shot dead Kyadondo East Member of Parliament driver Robert Kyagulanyi’s driver in Arua on Monday evening.

Yasin Kawuma who driving MP Bobi Wine’s Tundra vehicle was killed by a bullet that hit him during the chaos as Kassiano Wadri’s supporters allegedly pelted stones on the presidential convoy and vandalized President Yoweri Museveni’s vehicle.

Addressing journalists on Tuesday afternoon at the police headquarters in Naguru, police spokesperson Emilian Kayima said police does not know the person who shot dead Kawuma.

“Yasin Kawuma succumbed to a bullet wound and we are yet to know by who. We can’t conclude now because some of those arrested had weapons,”Kayima told a news conference.

“We shall need to find out whether the bullet was from us (security forces) or them.”

On Monday, MP Kyagulanyi said in a tweet that he suspects the bullet that killed his driver had targeted him as the chaos ensued.

“Police has shot my driver dead thinking they've shot at me. My hotel is now cordoned off by police and SFC,”Kyagulanyi tweeted on Monday night.

How events unfolded

According to police, chaos erupted when Kassiano Wadri’s  supporters tried to block the presidential motorcade as President Museveni left Arua Boma  prompting security forces to fire teargas and bullets in the air to ‘calm’ the situation.

The president was being chauffeured to Pokea Primary School board his chopper after campaigning for Nusura Tiperu, the NRM candidate in the Arua Municipality by-elections.

“One of the president’s cars was attacked and smashed by the hooligans that were donning colours of one of the contestants in the election, Kassiano Wadri,”Kayima said.

“At this point, security intervened by firing live bullets in the air and teargas to calm the situation.”

He added that earlier, the same group had tried to block the convoy using a grader.

Presidential car vandalized

It is alleged that one of the vehicles in the presidential convoy was vandalized during the scuffle as Wadri’s supporters pelted stones on the convoy.

“President Museveni’s car that was hit by opposition supporters this evening in Arua town. The police will issue a statement on this incident shortly,” the senior presidential press secretary Don Wanyama, the senior presidential press secretary  posted on his twitter account on Monday night.

The police spokesperson told journalists that by the time the convoy was pelted with stones, President Museveni was inside.

Kayima says a number of people including Members of Parliament have since the two incidents been arrested to help in police investigations.

Police say both Bobi Wine’s Tundra vehicle and the grader have since been impounded to help in investigations into the incident.
