Kayihura’s fate remains unclear as report exonerates him over Kaweesi murder

Featured

Fifty days after former Inspector General of Police, Gen Kale Kayihura was incarcerated at Makindye military barracks, his fate hangs in balance.

The latest development, according from reliable sources, is that a team of investigators has exonerated the former police chief in the murder of Felix Andrew Kaweesi, the former police spokesperson.

The team was put together to analyze a recording in which Kayihura is heard purportedly thanking a security operative for executing Kaweesi’s murder.

Sources have told us that this recording was the basis of Kayihura’s arrest but the police chief, during an earlier interrogation, insisted it was fake.

The recording was presented to President Museveni by the security chiefs but the president instructed that its accuracy and authenticity be verified first, as Kayihura is kept under lock and key.

Our sources have told us that the investigations committee, chaired by Grace Akullo, the head of Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) appears to have cast doubt on the recording in their report.

"They believe it is concocted and that Kayihura's  words were lifted out of several conversations and meshed together," said one of the source, knowledgeable about the investigations.

According to sources close to State House, the investigators had earlier asked Museveni to give them only two weeks, from the time Kayihura was arrested, to verify the recording.

When the deadline elapsed, the team asked for an additional month.

Our sources have told us that after the team informed Museveni about their findings, the president appears to be stuck with Kayihura.

Yet he will not sanction his release yet, according to our sources.

We have also been told that Museveni is concerned about the quality of intelligence he receives and how some security organisations are being run.
