Speaker advises cooperatives on documentation

Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga has commended the growth of cooperatives in the country and called on leaders of Savings and Credit Cooperative Organizations (SACCOS) to document their affairs for adequate management and support.

The Speaker made the remarks while speaking to members of Abasoga Twisakirara Development Group who gathered at Nawanyago Primary School in Kamuli district on Saturday, 28 July 2018.

“Prepare and give me a well-documented report indicating the projects which you are running so that we can easily find means of supporting the work that the group is doing,” Kadaga said.

She commended the group for taking the initiative to uplift the locals in the area and said that it was the best way to benefit from the available Government programs like the Women’s and Youth Funds.

She also noted with concern that beneficiaries of the SAGE program who are the elderly, were receiving less of their dividend of shs25,000 that is disseminated using mobile money, and had been inevitably affected by the one percent mobile tax.

“I will follow up your request on the issue of mobile money taxes and scratch cards so that we can find a solution for you to do your work effectively,” the Speaker said.

Kamuli district NRM chairperson, Samuel Bamwole also commended Abasoga Twisakirara Development Group for working to uplift the local area residents especially women who are mostly family caretakers.

“The ordinary person might not understand what your group does. We need to sensitize them to appreciate the benefits so that we can fight poverty,” said Bamwole.

Lona Kabaka, the coordinator of Abasoga Twisakirara Development Group said that the group needs to acquire land on which to set up an office, to ease access to the group’s executive and operations.

“The office we have is temporary and we are searching earnestly for a permanent address. We appreciate the support from the Jinja Woman MP Hon. Loy Katali,” Kabaka said.
