VIDEO: MPs vow to retable 7-year tenure motion

Featured

Just days after the constitutional court threw out the 7-year term for members of parliament, a section of legislators are mooting a proposal to retable a bill that will see the extension of years for the Members of Parliament and local council leaders from five to seven years as it had been passed in the Raphael Magyezi bill.

To these legislators it’s unfortunate that the Constitutional court nullified the seven-year tenure of their office arguing that the five years are inadequate to enable them fulfil their mandate of representation.

Kabula County MP, James Kakooza said that legislators need more time to plan for the country.

“Other than going into several elections, politicking does not help a country, what people need most is to have a term where you can plan for your country, this country is still young and we need to develop it more and we need a bit of more time for government to plan,” Kakooza said.

Kyaaka County legislator Jackson Kafuuzi said he would need to do a little more research about this matter despite being a beneficiary.

The fire spitting legislators say, the idea to have the motion retabled in the August house, the caucus will have to reach a consensus.

“That matter will be discussed in the caucus and if the caucus comes up with that decision of course we shall support it,” Kassanda South MP, Simeo Nsubuga said.

But to some legislators who opposed the controversial constitutional amendment on the age limit, the new idea of fronting the motion to extend the tenure of Parliament is unfortunate and uncalled for.

“No body should come and tell us that the five years will not be enough to deliver, No way, certain MPs have delivered before in their five years, what is so special with this 10th parliament,” Maurice Kibalya, the Bugabula South MP said.

“As a member of parliament who never supported them I still reserve my comment,” MP Paul Ssemakula Lutamaguzi

It is now only time that will tell whether these legislators in the 10th Parliament are still committed to benefit from the two years extension by following the proper rules of procedure while deliberation on the matter as guided by the Constitutional justices.
