EC sets date to replace slain Arua legislator, Ibrahim Abiriga

The Electoral Commission has set August 15th as the date to replace slain Arua Municipality Member of Parliament. Ibrahim Abiriga through a by-election.

Speaking to journalists on Thursday, EC chairman Simon Byabakama Mugenyi, said the process will be kick-started by updating of the voter’s registers next week.

The Electoral Commission boss went ahead to note that there will be a stakeholders meeting in Arua in a bid to harmonise any raising issues and nominations will run from 19th, to 20th July 2018.

"Nomination of candidates shall be conducted for a period of two days, from July 19-20. The commission has also banned any fundraising activities in Arua Municipality to allow a levelled-ground for candidates in the race,” he said.

He also announced that Shs504m will be used by the Commission to organise the elections.

The seat fell vacant following the horrid murder of Ibrahim Abiriga on June 8. So far over 20 people have expressed interest in the seat among whom include; former Terego County legislator, Kassiano Wadri who is expected to come into the race on the FDC ticket.

Others are; Hussein Lumumba Amin, son to former president Idi Amin Dada, former Arua Woman MP, FDC diehard Christine Abia and prominent lawyer Caleb Alaka, among others.
