Prof Muhwezi appointed Acting MUBS Principal as Balunywa is pushed to the sidelines

Education

Makerere university Business School governing council today morning announced Prof Moses Muhwezi as acting principal at the institution.

Muhwezi has been deputy principal of MUBS.

The announcement effectively means the long serving MUBS Principal, Waswa Balunywa, has been pushed to the sidelines as the controversy surrounding his appointment is sorted out.

Balunywa’s contract expired this month and there has been controversy over its renewal.

Last week the council chairman, Prof Venansius Baryamureeba opined that Balunywa was not fit to get another contract because he had clocked 60 years.

But in a lengthy stingy rebuttal, Balunywa shot back at Baryamureeba accusing him of trying to position himself to take over as MUBS principal.

On Monday when council sat to consider the way forward, Baryamureeba was asked to excuse himself because he  has publicly made statements against the re-appointment of Balunywa.

Sources told us that members in the council were evenly split between those who prefer Balunywa to continue and those against him.

It was therefore decided in the meantime that an acting principal be appointed as the impasse is resolved.

One of the board members, Beatrice Anywar told The Nile Post that the council is waiting for advice from the Education Service Commission

She said Muhwezi will handle the task well in the meantime.

“Prof. Moses Muhwezi is very senior, he has been working together with Balunywa. We are sure that he will well run the institution as we wait to hear from the education service commission” Anywar said.

On his part, Prof Muhwezi said: “I have been doing most of the administrative work with Prof. Balunywa, there fore this appointment is not any challenge to me.”

Balunywa has led MUBS for the last 21 years, towering over everybody.
