Museveni renovates church he prayed in before going to bush, but leaves angry

President Yoweri Museveni Saturday laid a foundation stone for the construction of St Andrew’s Church Buremba in Kazo country, Kiruhura District.

According to Museveni, the church is important to him because it is where he first prayed in 1981 shortly before going to the bush where he started an armed resistance against the then Ugandan government.

“I went to see Mzee Christopher Rubarenzya, an elder, as a way of bidding him farewell even if I did not tell him the purpose of my visit. Later, he brought me to this church and we prayed,” Museveni said.

“Later, I again came to check on him and we still prayed at this church. I however realised that the sanctuary was still in the same state that I had left it. I resolved to join the Christians to rehabilitate it. I am happy that we now have a renovated church,” he added.

However, President Museveni was irked by residents who he accused of degrading the environment by draining swamps thus interfering with the rain cycle and consequently causing drought.

“I noticed that some people are establishing gardens and planting trees in swamps. I want all of them to vacate, and the Chief Administrative Officer should enforce this,” Museveni directed.

In January 2017, president Museveni declared war on environmental degradation, giving wetland encroachers a one-month ultimatum to leave of be forced out by the police.

“All those occupying swamps should leave in peace before police comes for them. If you have planted crops, harvest, and go away,” Mr Museveni said.

President Museveni blamed the current scarcity of water caused by drought in different parts of the country on environmental degradation.
