Lawyer in Nekyon-death-claims released, co –accused denied bail

Buganda Road Magistrates Court has released on bail Adam Mamkot, a city lawyer accused of with allegedly writing to police criminal investigation to inquire into the death of Akbar Adoko Nekyon.

In a letter dated May 8, lawyers from Makmot Kibwanga and company advocates has written to the Director Criminal Investigations Department to report a potential homicide in the death of the late Nekyon.

Consequently, three people including Mariam Akullo, a relative to Nekyon and James Kazungu were arrested and charged with impersonation, conspiracy, electronic fraud, giving false information, forgery and authoring false documents before Buganda Road grade one magistrate Charles Yeteise.

On Thursday, the group through their lawyers led by Eron Kiiza applied for bail but the magistrate only released Kibwanga leaving his two co-accused in prison.

In his ruling, Yeteise said that Akullo’s sureties were not substantial as one of them did not produce an LC letter to introduce him and the area of residence, despite telling court that he was coming from Otuke district.

The grade one magistrate declined to release Kazungu on bail after being told that there is an arrest warrant issued against him after jumping bail in an attempted murder case whose hearing is ongoing at the Nakawa magistrate’s court.

He argued that one of the people brought to stand surety for Kazungu had also stood surety for him for his bail in Nakawa but failed to compel him to appear in court on Monday prompting court to issue an arrest warrant.

“He failed to fulfil his duty as a surety and he might again do the same when we release you (Kazungu) on bail,” the grade one magistrate said.

The case has been adjourned to June 6.

Nekyon, a cousin to former President Dr.Apollo Milton Obote died on May 4 but the family later wrote to the Director Criminal Investigations Department Grace Akullo asking them to investigate the death they say could have been caused by of the family members.

“The late Haji Akbar Adoko Nekyon died under mysterious circumstances from a hotel room in the Sheraton Hotel in Kampala and was falsely stated that he had died from Nsambya hospital,” says the letter in part.

“All the time of his life was guarded by at least two police officers and that one officer called Ogwang Jimmy is under arrest and detained in a secret place.”

In the letter, it is alleged that since Nekyon’s death, those who lived with him including a ten year old boy have been “harassed”, “trailed” and “threatened”.
