Opposition will feel weight of NRM party in Rukungiri- Tanga Odoi

Ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party, Electoral Commission chairman, Tanga Odoi has warned the opposition parties to expect the full might of the party in power during the upcoming woman MP byelections in Rukungiri District.

Odoi said that all factors held constant, the position is NRM’s to lose if they make no mistake in execution.

“NRM has the might in Rukungiri if we put aside the internal bickering which I think will be handled by the chairman (President Museveni). This a byelection where we put all focus in just one place, unlike the main election,” Odoi said.

“The NRM will go into the Rukungiri election full force, and the opposition parties will feel the weight,” he added.

However, the opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party Deputy Secretary General, Harold Kaija insisted Rukungiri is home ground to the main opposition party.

“Rukungiri is home ground to the FDC and a must win for us, our candidate will be nominated on May 2 and we shall kick off expecting victory,” Kaija said.

After losing the February 2016 parliamentary election for Rukungiri Woman MP, Betty Bamukwasa Muzanira (FDC) challenged the victory of National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate, Winnie Matsiko, over bribery of voters.

Consquently, court nullified Matsiko’s victory on March 22 and ordered for fresh election on May 31.
