Developing a strong positive attitude

CHARLES NATUHAMYA

For quite some time, I have seen what people go through while they are preparing for an interview the next day or a few days ahead. Trust me I’ve been one of the victims of this misconception.

People tend to focus so much on proving what they know or can do (their abilities) and how they look physically before the interview panel (their appearance) and forget the most important bit that outweighs the rest.

Though these two are important as well, they do not outshine your attitude.

Research was carried out to ascertain what top business executives consider most when they are hiring staff, and to what extent. The results were counterintuitive.

They said the most important elements of potential employees are; 5 percent availability, 5 percent adaptability, 10 percent ability, 10 percent appearance and 70 percent attitude. This is the extent to which attitude is valued.

Therefore it’s of great importance to take some time developing a great attitude. And here is what you can do;

Stay away from negative influences

This is the first step to developing a great attitude. Whether it’s some place where you feel uncomfortable, or people that are too depressed; make sure you stay away from these negative factors.

Because, trying to become positive under these situations is really an uphill battle.

This also includes quitting watching negative news or following negative stories on social media. Avoiding this will instil positive feelings and vibes in you that bring forth a positive attitude.

Build your confidence and self-esteem

Self-esteem is an indispensable component of a positive attitude. It’s mostly important during times of adversary because it keeps you going without blaming both yourself and the environment around you.

Once challenges come your way, you are well able to go through them because of your positive outlook towards life.

Do what you are passionate about

Many times we get lost in a world of living up to standards or doing what society considers as ‘up to the mark’. But this is the time to do what you love doing.

So start doing whatever you consider awesome to you. It can be going on a road trip, taking piano lessons or working out in the gym.

Whatever it is, go for it. When you do such things, you will realize that life has more to offer than just the normal daily routine of work and home. This will positively change your attitude towards life from the inside out.

Be yourself. Instead of trying to fulfil someone’s idea of ‘perfect’, decide to be the best version of yourself. This will enable you to be confident about yourself, knowing that you’re doing the best that you can ever do.

Because no matter how hard we try to be like others, we will never be exactly like them. Embrace the idea that the only yardstick to measure success is the best version of yourself, and not what society considers to standout.
