Uganda’s Onyango guides Sundowns to eighth league title

Uganda Cranes captain Dennis Onyango was on Saturday part of history as Mamelodi Sundowns lifted this year’s ABSA premiership league title.

Pitso Mosimane’s side beat Ajax Cape Town 3-1 to be crowned league champions with one game for the league to end, thanks to goals from Khama Billiat, Ricardo Nascimento and Sibusiso Vilakazi at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday.

By winning today’s game, Onyango’s Sundowns are now 59 points, opening a seven point unreachable lead over rivals Orlando Pirates in second position but lost to Cape Town City.

This was Denis Onyango’s third title in South Africa’s top flight league after winning it earlier in 2013 and 2015 with the same club he joined in 2011.

The Brazilians have now won the ABSA Premiership for eight times.

“We've been doing this for not one day, two years but for five years and the champions league is on again next year,”Mamelodi tactician Mosimane said after his team lifted the title .

They will now represent South Africa in the CAF champion’s league for the fifth time in a row.
