2 shot dead as police bust alleged criminals at Usafi Mosque

Two people have been shot dead in a police operation at Usafi Mosque in Kisenyi and other locations around Kampala.

The Operation conducted with the help of sister security agencies also saw a sizeable number of suspects involved in acts of terrorism and radicalisation arrested.

According to Police spokesperson, Emilian Kayima, the two people shot were armed and tried to attack the officers in the operation.

“The Uganda Police Force in a joint operation with sister security agencies early this morning conducted an operation at Usafi mosque in Kisenyi and other locations in and around Kampala. Women and children who had been held hostage were successfully rescued,” Kayima says.

“In the operation, two of the armed suspects were shot dead as they attacked the officers in the operation. Details of this operation will follow,” he adds.

This is not the first time the police is making raids on mosques in the country citing involvement in criminal operations.

In December last year, a combined team of police and officers from the Joint Anti-Terrorism Task Force (JATT) raided Nakasero Mosque, ransacked it and arrested 11 people.

Then Inspector General of Police, Gen Kale Kayihura would later say the raid at Nakasero Mosque was as a result of information revealed by a Muslim suspect in connection to the killing of Maj Muhammad Kiggundu, a Muslim cleric who was gunned down on November 26 ,2016 at Masanafu Trading Centre in Rubaga Division, Kampala.

A week later after Nakasero raid, Police raided Masjid Abubaker Sudiq located in Kiwatule, a Kampala suburb and arrested 18 people accusing them of  being involved in criminal activities and the killings of Muslim clerics. However, police released the suspects later after finding them innocent.
