Makerere Student Drowns After Morning Jog

A first year Makerere University student John Mirimu (21) has drowned. Mirimu drowned in the university swimming pool at around 5:30am on Saturday morning.

John Mirimu (extreme right) with friends was very outgoing.

Mirimu was returning to his Nsibirwa hall of residence after jogging practice with friends when he decided to go for a swim. Fellow students alerted police when Mirimu failed to resurface after jumping into the pool. Although he was given first aid at the scene before being rushed to Mulago hospital, he was declared dead on arrival.

The matter has been recorded at Makerere Police Station under file number SD 02/07/04 2018.

Mirimu has been an Information Systems student at Uganda's oldest university.

Close friend Douglas Kikonyogo says he is unsure why Mirimu was tempted to swim as Mirimu's mother says her son did not have swimming experience.

Kikonyogo adds that many students visit the swimming pool on Saturday morning outside mandated hours to swim without supervision.

Kikonyogo describes Mirimu as very outgoing with friends from all walks of life.
