Minister Gen.Katumba Wamala spearheads efforts to develop Ssese islands

From the gruesome incident of a five year girl who was defiled while passed through an palm oil plantation as she went to school six kilometers away from her village, members of the Rotary Club of Kampala Ssese islands have started on the long journey to provide a school.

On Thursday, the members of the rotary club led by the Minister of State for works Gen.Edward Katumba Wamala held a fundraising function at the Nomo gallery in Kampala in a bid to collect shs 100 million needed to construct Ddagye community primary school in Ssese islands.

According to Gen.Katumba, Ugandans ought to have the spirit of helping and giving back to their communities.

“Many people think that only the rich give back but it is not the wealth one has but the big heart. We need to assist the unprivileged,”Katumba who is a born of Ssese islands said.

He said that their efforts would see a new primary school constructed in Ssese islands to benefit the unprivileged children who walk long distances to school.

According to the minister, a lot needs to be done to ensure that the islands develop like other parts of the main land which is not the case now.

“Population and tourism sector have grown over the years in Ssese but the social services like schools and health facilities have not improved in the same way. We need to help these people also feel part of Uganda by making impact on their lives.”

Dr.Fredrick Kakembo, the president for the Rotary Club of Kampala Ssese islands said that after helping to construct a health centre that serves over 400 people monthly, it is high time they focus on fundraising for a primary school to benefit children in the area.

“We shall continue looking for partnerships to help us contribute for having better social services in Ssese,”Dr.Kakembo said.

The Rotary Club of Kampala Ssese islands is a group of people born of Ssese islands in Lake Victoria who came together under Rotary to help develop their area.

Ssese is composed of 84 islands in the northwest of Lake Victoria with about 43 of these being inhabited.
