Josephine Ekwang appointed Director of Citizenship and Immigration

Museveni fired the two top immigration officers for claiming that they had awarded a lucrative contract, which would include provision of software to connect all border posts to Spanish company Gemalto against Germany firm Veridos.

This calculation, it is alleged was meant to pressurize the German firm to offer kickbacks. Museveni has previously written in favor of contracting Veridos to print the Uganda currency notes. When the two were fired, the president told them to immediately handover office to the Internal Affairs Ministry, Permanent Secretary, Benon Mutambi. Sources said they indeed handed over office on Wednesday evening.

The sacking notice came through the Public Service Head, John Mitala. The two are being investigated by Criminal Investigations Directorate and Inspector General of Government (IGG) for allegedly mishandling visa fees, irregular issuance of passports and other work permits in the directorate.
