Makerere University dean accused of pocketing Shs 5 million from student

 

The dean of students Cyriaco Kabagambe has been accused of soliciting money from Ronald Ainebyona a student at Makerere University in order to irregularly include him on the list of guild presidential contestants.

Ainebyona alleged that Kabagambe together with the members of the University electoral commission solicited Shs 5 million from him.

But Kabagambe denied the allegations.

Ainebyona accuses Kabagambe and Peter Makumbi, the former chairman of the university electoral commission of being behind the scheme.

Ainebyona says that when he consulted Makumbi on whether he was qualified to stand, the former chairman told him that he did not have the minimum requirements but was quick to add that he could find a way out for him if he coughed some money.

“I personally gave Shs 5.6 million to to my tormentors that is the Dean and the chairman of the electoral commission who resigned recently on promises that they would process for me all the requirements to be nominated as guild president. They breached the contract and trust we had. I was later intimidated that I would be suspended from the University,” Ainebyona said.

He claims that when he later asked to given a refund, Kabagambe and Makumbi became evasive.

“Before I filed the petition we had a mediation session, including the dean together with the chief security officer and we came to an amicable understanding that they would return my money which they have not done,” he added.

Kabagambe denied all allegations levelled against him.

“The student is saying that the chairman of the electoral commission asked for money yet the qualifications for standing for guild presidency are very clear in the university constitution, I had no reasons to ask for money from the student yet we have guiding principles,” Kabagambe said.

Makumbi, too, denied the allegations.

He said Ainebyona’s academic documents are forged according to the results they got from the academic registrar and what he presented to them.

 

The university last week suspended all guild campaign rallies in order to avert the threat of violence.
