Journalist arrested over fraud, human trafficking

Detectives at Katwe police station are holding former journalist Dean Lubowa Saava for fraud, Human trafficking and obtaining money by false pretence.

Lubowa who quit the media more than one year ago has been running an employment recruitment agency in Kibuye, on the outskirts of Kampala. Lubowa reportedly used the agency Global Skills International Limited, to receive money from people who expected jobs in return.

He was charging between 2.5 million and 8 million Shillings from individuals seeking employment in the Emirates. Indeed, some of his clients traveled to Dubai and Abu-Dhabi, only to find themselves stranded, with no jobs and no place of abode.

Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire says police received complaints from four victims who went to Dubai and bounced.

"When they returned they came straight to police and opened up a case on March 5, 2018," Owoyesigyire said. Since then, 37 people have recorded statements with police against him.

Lubowa, who is being investigated for obtaining money by false pretence and Human Trafficking, is detained at Katwe Police Station.
