Ugandan tour firms conned in "bogus" London roadshow

More than 16 tour firms from East Africa including companies from Uganda were last year conned of more than $25,000 (Shs 92 million) after they were duped to participate in a roadshow in London that never took place.

The primary objective of the show was to create awareness amongst international travel agents and tour operators on East Africa’s products.

Farouk Busulwa, one of the Ugandan tour operators told The Nile Post that each of the 16 firms paid $1600 as registration fees to a company called Africa Nations Cup based in London.

"We traveled to London and there was no roadshow. They put us in a hotel in a place called Croydon, for everyone to go shopping," he said.

Busulwa, who was the coordinator of the 16 firms, claimed that Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) was also culpable because it sent emails urging Ugandan firms to take part in the show.

"UTB also had a representative in London Mr Edwin Muzahura as everything was happening," he said.

Efforts to talk to UTB were futile.

The Nile Post has seen an agreement signed between the East Africa Tourism Platform (EATP) and Africa Nations Cup to manage the roadshow.
