President Museveni calls for more AMISOM support

President Museveni, has appealed to all troop contributing countries to the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and international partners to step up their assistance to the Somali peace keeping mission for the continuity of relative peace and security in Somalia.

Speaking at the closing ceremony for the summit of troop contributing countries to AMISOM and international partners at Speke Resort Munyonyo on Friday, Museveni said the peace keeping operation needs money to buy more modern equipment and also train the human resource (soldiers) since the Al-Shabaab threat continues to change tactics daily.

“If we do things right then Somalia can become much better than before,” he urged.

He saluted international partners for the enormous support to AMISOM operations and lauded the Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed for creating an enabling environment for the success of the peace keeping mission.

He however warned against the ‘’mistake’’ of leaving Somalia in the hands of terrorists since a lot or resources and sacrifices have already been committed.

The Somali president, Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed commended all the troop contributing countries for showing a spirit of brotherhood in the fight against the common enemy- Al Shabaab terrorists.

The summit agreed that the sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of Somalia have to be recognised and that AMISOM troop contributing countries and other partners should continue to reaffirm their commitment in assisting the Somali government in its stabilisation efforts.

They also agreed to persuade the United Nations Security Council from its decision of resizing the AMISOM troop size by 2020 to allow recovery of territory still under the control of Al Shabaab insurgents.

.The summit was also attended by Chiefs of Defence Forces and Ministers of Defence of AMISOM Troop Contributing Countries and representatives from international partners and other delegates.

Uganda is the biggest contributor of troops to the AMISOM .

Other troop contributing countries are Kenya,Burundi, Djibouti,Somalia, Ethiopia and Sierra Leone.
