MPs want House recalled from recess over wave of kidnaps, murders

A section of legislators have started championing for the recall of members from recess and task the internal affairs minister, Gen Jeje Odong, to brief the House on the endless killings of civilians and investors.

The group is led by Kasambya MP, Gaffa Mbwatekamwa.

With a series of kidnaps and murders, the MPs  are seeking the intervention of Speaker Rebecca Kadaga to task government to explain these brutal occurences.

Mbwatekamwa and mover of the motion told The Nile Post that "it is unfortunate that we’re losing people including investors and we are not sure of what will happen tomorrow. Government has kept a deaf ear regardless of the cries of the masses."

Luttamaguzi Ssemakul, the Nakaseke South MP said parliament has to take a firm stand against the killing of innocent people.

"It is like we have do not care about these innocent killings. Unless the masses riot that’s when they [government] can wake up," he said.

Robert Centenary, the Kasese municipality legislator pointed out that investors were being killed and the country's image is being tainted.

Susan Magara who was killed by unknown people

The MPs also talked about the friction between the minister of state for Security, Henry Tumukunde and the police chief, Gen Kale Kayihura which they said had hampered the fight against crime.

They asked the president to re-appoint them to different offices.

Since last year more than 20 women and four foreign nationals have been killed under mysterious circumstances.

The latest is Susan Magara, whose body was dumped along the Entebbe Express highway by unknown people who had demanded a ransom of Shs 3 billion from her family.

Under rule 21, parliament can be recalled from recess provided there is a request made in writing by a member and supported by one third of the MPs.
