Flying Squad operative still missing- army court told

Details about the whereabouts of Flying Squad operative Special Police Constable Faisal Katende accused together with other senior police officers of kidnapping President Kagame’s bodyguard are still scanty, the General Court Martial has heard.

Katende was released on bail last month before he was allegedly rearrested and detained by unknown people.

On Tuesday, the defence lawyer Lt. Brian Moogi told court chaired by Lt.Gen. Andrew Guti that he has not heard from Katende since he was released on bail, raising concerns over his whereabouts.

“I contacted his wife who said she didn’t know where he is but said he (Katende ) had been arrested by people she didn’t know,”Lt.Moogi told court.

Another defence lawyer Caleb Alaka was quick to add that his fellow lawyer Evans Ochieng was representing Katende in court but said he was working on a habeas corpus so that the Flying Squad operative could be produced.

“According to sources, he is being detained by ISO but we cannot confirm this,”Alaka said.

In response, the state prosecutor Maj.Raphael Mugisha said he also didn’t know where the accused is since he was released on bail a few weeks ago.

Recently, Katende’s wife tasked security agencies to ensure that they find her missing husband whom she said is the sole bread winner for the family.

Last week, the police spokesperson Emilian Kayima told journalists they don’t have Katende in their detention adding that they also don’t know of anyone holding him.

Faisal Katende is accused together with eight others including former Special Operations Unit commander Nixon Agasiirwe and former Professional Standards boss Joel Aguma of kidnapping Lt.Joel Mutabazi before repatriating him back to Rwanda in 2013.
