18 days to World Cup trophy visit

It is 18 days to the much-anticipated FIFA world cup trophy visit to  Uganda.

As we continue the count down to the D-day, here is a look at the only three goalkeepers to have captained their national teams to the title.

When Spanish goalkeeper Iker Cassillas was presented the 2010 FIFA World cup trophy in South Africa, after Andres Iniesta’s lone strike gave them victory over the Netherlands in the final, he became the third and until now last goalkeeper to lead his country to the title.

The first goalkeeper to captain his side was Gianpiero Combi, who was the Italian goalkeeper in 1934, when the hosts beat Czechoslovakia 2-1 after extra-time to lift the then Jules Rimet trophy.

48 years later it was another Azzuri Dino Zoff who became the second shot stopper to skipper a World Cup winning side, becoming to-date the oldest captain to lift the trophy.

Zoff was capped 112 times by Italy and is third in the all-time Italian rankings.

The world cup trophy is currently in Israeli city of Tel Aviv, from where it will be flown Cyprus as Uganda waits for its day, the 6th of March.

The Nile Post and NBS Tv will start giving out free tickets for the 6th March public viewing at the Lugogo Cricket Oval.
