President Yoweri Museveni, who is also the commander in chief of the armed forces has said that the growth and strength of Uganda People’s Defence Forces can only be owed to Mwalimu Juilus Nyerere and Samora Machel.

Speaking during the 37th Tarehe Sita celebrations at Boma grounds in Butaleja, Museveni said that the war for liberation of the country and also the formation of the UPDF did not start with the attack on Kabamba barracks on 6, February 1981 but some years back.

“This big army you see here would not have been possible if it wasn’t for the guidance of Mwalimu Nyerere and Samora Machel. I want to remind you never to forget the solidarity of Tanzania and Mozambique,”Museveni said.

Machel was the president of Mozambique from 1970 to October 1986 when he died in a plane crash in South Africa whereas Nyerere led Tanzania from 1964 to 1985.

According to the president, the attack on Kabamba was one of the several actions that led to liberation of the country.

Museveni applauded the UPDF for beginning from scratch to become one of the strongest armies on the continent and has been able defend the country.
