South Sudan: Ugandan traders cry out over compensation

A section of Ugandan traders in South Sudan have accused David Bahati, the minister of State of Finance in charge of Planning for favouring one group of traders ahead of another in relation to compensation.

The verified list has 33 companies which are going to be paid Shs 453 billion but a section of the traders say these companies actually owe Shs 151 billion. They suspect these companies have connived with people in government to rip off the tax payer.

Government is set to pay Shs 453 billion as compensation to 33 companies which supplied goods and services to the government of South Sudan.

However, a section of other traders say this figure is inflated and that these companies could have connived with people in government. They claim the actual figure is Shs 151 billion.

After losing her husband, Achiro Helen started doing business in South Sudan.

But the business was interrupted when war broke out between the warring factions of the SPLM.

Achiro says she lost a lot of money due to the war and it is only fair that she is compensated.

Some traders have now turned their guns against David Bahati, the minister of state for Finance in charge of Planning for favouring the 33 companies lined up for compensation.

The traders are questioning the committee that handled the verification process saying it excluded some traders and inflated the money.

Two years ago, President Museveni issued a directive that all South Sudan traders who were affected by the war and other factors be compensated. It is from this back ground that this section of traders want to be treated equally.
