Museveni to meet religious leaders

Featured

President Museveni is scheduled to meet religious leaders who fall under the umbrella body of the Inter Religious Council (IRC), The Nile Post has learnt.

Sources within IRC told us that the meeting could take place today and State House protocol has notified them to be on the ready.

The IRC brings together leaders of the major religious denominations in Uganda. It is currently chaired by Mufti Shaban Mubajje.

The agenda of the meeting is still not known but sources said one of the issues that may be discussed could be the criticism of the recently passed Age-Limit Act by the clergy.

The Act lifted the presidential age-limit and extended the tenure of MPs and other local elected leaders from five to seven years.

Last year, religious leaders including the Archbishop of Kampala Dr Cyprian Lwanga lashed out at Parliament for passing the law despite the opposition from a wide section of the public.

In turn, President Museveni while delivering his new year message cautioned religious leaders to stay away from politics.

Don Wanyama, the senior presidential press secretary, neither confirmed nor denied the meeting.

When we called him yesterday, he said he would get back to us but he had not by press time.
