Six butchers jailed 8 months for using dead bodies' chemicals to preserve meat

City Hall court in Kampala has sentenced six butchers to eight months imprisonment after being convicted of using dangerous  chemicals to preserve meat and fish .

Last week, Kampala Capital City Authority arrested a number of butchers suspected to be using a chemical identified as formalin to preserve meat.

On Thursday,  grade one magistrate Beatrice Khainza ruled that the suspects' actions put the lives  of innocent members of public in danger and therefore deserved a long custodial sentence to deter other people from doing it.

Earlier, Khainza had declined to grant two of the suspects their request of having the charges read afresh to them as had applied for on Wednesday.

The magistrate ruled that the  charges had been  read to them  in a language  they(suspects )told court that they fully  understand and also  negotiated for lighter sentences .

She however advised them to appeal against the sentence if they feel unsatisfied within 14 days from the sentence.

Six people including; Erias Katumba, Isa Ssenoga , Isma Mutebi, Umar Kalyango, Baker Mulondo and Ibrahim Ssekate were  last week arrested from areas of Nakasero, Nankulabye and Ntinda Markets  in  an operation carried out  by KCCA health and  law enforcement officers on dirty butchers.
