Police in Mityana District have arrested 10 people alleged to have broken into a police cell at Kiryokya police post and murdered a suspected motorcycle thief.

Those arrested are suspected to be part of an angry mob that attacked the police post based at Kiryokya trading center, Kalangalo Sub County. They reportedly caused havoc and broke into the cell after the three police officers who were deployed at the post ran away.

Preliminary investigations indicate that 28-year-old William Matovu a resident of Kibale Local Council was rescued from a mob of boda boda riders on Monday and detained at the police post.

However,  Tuesday morning the same group of boda boda riders mobilised themselves and attacked the police post,  broke into the cell, picked the suspect,  beat him and later burnt him alive.

Wamala Regional police spokesperson Norbert Ochom confirmed the incident saying police had already made progress.

“We have identified some suspects and we will bring them to justice, ” Ochom said.
A team of detectives has been deployed at Kalangalo Sub County to search for all the suspects that were part of the attack.

Six motorcycles believed to belong to the group members have already been impounded.

The 10 are held on tentative charges of murder and Malicious damage contrary to section 188, 189 and 335(1) respectively of the Penal Code Act.
