Kawunyemu to be intensified on New Year's day
The Uganda Police Force has said it will intensify its operation against drink-driving as a measure to curb crime during the new year's celebration.
Police spokesperson Emilian Kayima says that although the operation was not carried out intensively towards the Christmas period, this time Police is going to ensure that no one drives while drunk. He says looking at the number of accidents and death reported, it is important to apprehend drivers who risk their lives and those of other road users.

According to Kayima, although people were excited questioning why Police did not deploy its officers, this time it's going to be beefed up. He says riders and pedestrians who are drunk will be arrested and detained too.
"We shall have officers on major routes in and around Kampala and those who will be found to be drunk will be charged accordingly. We do not expect anyone drunk to be on the steering wheel," Kayima stated.
The campaign against drink-driving is dubbed red card campaign, aimed at ensuring safety of road users.
Kayima says most of the accidents registered during the Christmas period was as a result of human error or fault, meaning things like alcohol while driving should be completely stopped. He appealed to drivers especially those who know they will carry passengers to desist from doing it.
At least 10 people died and many sustained injuries in road accidents between 26th to 29th December, according to Kayima.
Four people died in an accident in Lira involving a Toyota Rav 4 and and an Isuzu ELF. Those killed in the accident included Reverend Johnson Enamu and his wife Alice Apolot, his mother Alice Atim. Another accident in Kabale road claimed the lives of three people while another three people perished in Serere district.
Kayima warned against reckless driving and speeding in celebration to mark the new year.
