Kiprotich will not miss Commonwealth Games – UAF

The Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) has said star athlete Stephen Kiprotich will not miss the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia as had been earlier feared.

Dominic Otuchet, President of the Federation said on Wednesday evening that although Kiprotich missed the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Scotland, the star runner has been asked to be part of the team nest year.

The 2012 Olympic gold medalist Kiprotich and Joshua Kiprui Cheptegei were reportedly targeting other races in Europe instead of taking part in Australia.

Kiprotich was planning to run in the 2018 Tokyo Marathon on February 25th, while the 10,000 metres World Championship silver medalist Cheptegei was also opting for another race in Europe.

"We have spoken to the athletes and insisted they must make the team for the Commonwealth so that Uganda can have a strong squad.

"We had wanted to have 25 runners on the team, but we are being restricted to 19 by the Uganda Olympic Committee because of limited funding from the government," added Otuchet.

In 2014 Kiprotich skipped the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland where Moses Kipsiro was Uganda's sole gold medal winner in the 10,000m race.

The Games that bring together members of the Commonwealth will take place April 4-15 in the Gold Coast City.

Besides athletics, for the first time Uganda will have the national Netball team, She Cranes feature at the  Games after they lifted the African Championship trophy.

The Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) also confirmed that Uganda will enter athletes in Swimming, Boxing, Badminton, Shooting, Table Tennis, track and field events and the rugby 7s team.
