President Museveni's advisor remanded over prohibited hippo teeth

The Buganda Road chief magistrate James Mawanda Eremye on Friday remanded to Luzira prison Yekoyada Nuwagaba,  a presidential advisor on Political Matters to Luzira over unlawful possession of protected wildlife species worth more than Shs 200 million.

Nuwagaba who is accused together with two others who are still on the run denied the charges read to him by the Wildlife court in Kampala.

The court however declined to release the presidential adviser on bail having been advised by the prosecutor from Uganda Wildlife Authority, Winnie Namayanja, that  the accused had jumped police bond before.

Namayanja told court that it had taken over  ten months and a lot  of money spent by the state to have Nuwagaba re -arrested on Friday before being arraigned in the utilities court.

The presidential advisor was subsequently  remanded to Luzira until  December 12 .

Prosecution alleges that on 20th February 2017 at Casablanca club in  Kampala , Nuwagaba with three  others still at large were found  in possession of protected wild life species including 109kgs of hippo teeth valued at $30,500.

Prosecution also  alleges that between 20th and 21st February 2017 while in Makindye division, the presidential adviser  was found in possession of 78.5 kg of Hippo teeth valued at $27,500.
