Issa Kikungwe, 58, the former Kyadondo South MP and national treasurer for the Democratic Party, is dead.

Kikungwe passed on early this morning at Mengo Hospital from complications of a brain tumour.

The DP confirmed his death in a message.

“It is with great sadness that I announce the death of the DP National Treasurer, Al Hajji Issa Kikungwe,” reads a message from the party secretariat.

In a message, DP president general, Norbert Mao said Kikungwe was at the forefront of vital reforms to establish a financial management system that ensures accountability and transparency.

Mao said the former legislator was also at the forefront of promoting the project of building the party headquarters (Ben Kiwanuka House).

“Hon. Kikungwe was a decisive and dependable man. He was always committed to doing what he believed to be right. Even if you did not agree with him you knew where he stood on a particular issue,” Mao said.

“We ask the Almighty God to receive the soul of Hon. Kikungwe and grant him eternal peace when he approaches the Throne of Grace.”

The DP president said burial arrangements will be announced later.

In a condelence message, JEEMA, an opposition party noted: “We have lost a very firm & unshakable pillar as democracy seeking forces that is hard to replace. May the Almighty Allah strengthen you in this trial moment. Its Allah who gives & takes life. May the Almighty be pleased with him and forgive him all his shortcomings.”

Kikungwe had battled with complications of a brain tumour for years and spent long spells during the 9th parliament receiving treatment in India.

In 2016, after serving 15 years in parliament, Kikungwe decided to contest for the Kampala lord mayorship but lost to Erias Lukwago. He then retreated to private business.

He becomes the third senior DP member to die in a spell of 11 months.

In December 2016, Mathias Nsubuga, the party secretary general died followed by former national chairman, Boniface Byanyima in May 2017.

In July 2017, the former party president John Ssebaana Kizito also died.
